Our Story
Founded in 2015 by Val Nehls, We-Cycle grew from a simple idea in a garage to a community-driven movement dedicated to empowering the Ames and ISU communities through the power of the bicycle.

The We-Cycle Community, 2023.
To responsibly and safely redistribute used and refurbished bicycles to homeless or at-risk members of the community.
Equity Statement
We at We-Cycle recognize that the prevalence of homelessness is as diverse as any community and can impact anyone at any time. In order to provide the most efficient services, we allow those we serve the dignity of self-reporting their needs, and we respond accordingly. In addition, We-Cycle welcomes anyone expressing an interest in volunteerism with us, as we recognize the value each individual adds to our community.
How We Operate
We are not a public retail storefront, a general "free bike scheme," or a delivery service.
handshakeReferral-Based Model
We operate strictly on a referral basis. We partner directly with local social service agencies, shelters, and community organizations in Ames who identify individuals in genuine need of reliable transportation.
location_cityCommunity Focus
Our efforts are intensely focused on the Ames and Iowa State University (ISU) community. By keeping our scope local, we ensure our resources directly impact our immediate neighbors facing transportation insecurity.
Our Core Values
The principles that drive our workshop every single day.
Sustainability
We believe every bicycle has a second life. By refurbishing donated bikes, we keep usable transportation out of landfills and reduce our community's carbon footprint.
Empowerment
A bicycle is more than a toy—it's a tool for independence. We empower individuals by providing them with the means to reach jobs, schools, and essential services.
Education
We don't just fix bikes; we teach people how to maintain them. Sharing mechanical knowledge builds confidence and fosters a resilient community of cyclists.
